DC Premiere of “Joe Papp in Five Acts”
In partnership with the Shakespeare Theatre Company, the Aspen Institute Arts Program screens “Joe Papp in Five Acts,” an acclaimed documentary profiling the legendary director of “Shakespeare in the Park,” Joseph Papp, his collaborations with celebrated actors including Kevin Kline and Meryl Streep, and his efforts to expand access to theater on the simple premise, “We have public libraries, why not public theaters?”
Following the film, Shakespeare Theatre Company Artistic Director Michael Kahn is joined by Arts Program Director Damian Woetzel and Joe Papp in Five Acts directors Tracie Holder and Karen Thorsen to discuss democracy in the arts, and Papp’s role in the evolution of theater as a force for social justice.
