Justice Souter Calls For a Return to Civic Engagement and Education

August 1, 2009

During a May 20, 2009 talk at the Sandra Day O’Connor Project on the Judiciary Conference at Georgetown Law Center, co-presented by the Aspen Institute, Supreme Court Justice David Souter — who had announced his retirement but was still a member of the nation’s highest court — made some of his first public comments about his plans for after he left the bench. Souter discussed the state of civics education and civic engagement today and contrasted it with the way young people were engaged with the political system when he was young.

Saturday August 1, Justice Souter delivered the keynote speech at the 2009 American Bar Association Annual Conference. Watch an excerpt from Souter’s speech — based on that May 20 talk.
