Surviving pogroms and supporting his family at eight by playing for silent movies, Gregor Piatigorsky became principal cellist of the Bolshoi at 15 and met Lenin; escaping the Soviet Union made him an action hero, fleeing Europe in 1939 eventually made him an American. THE CELLIST tells the story of the virtuoso cellist and raconteur; reveling in his musicianship, wit and humanity and includes interviews with Yo-Yo Ma, Zubin Mehta, and Michael Tilson Thomas as well as tales from the virtuosic cellists and musicians he taught.
Producer Hamid Shams will be featured in a post-screening discussion along with Aspen Music School faculty member and Houston Symphony Principal Cellist, Brinton Smith who will also perform.
