Society of Fellows Symposium: Memory Matters: Through the Lens into Our Minds

Moderated by Marilyn Fabe, founding member of Film Studies at U.C. Berkeley, and Elizabeth Loftus, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Irvine. Special guest expert: Laura Thielen, Program Director and Executive Director of Aspen Film.

Please note: this symposium is the final SOF Symposium for 2009. For a complete listing of recent Society of Fellows events visit http://www.aspeninstitute.org/society-fellows/events.

Great films mirror, not only the external world, but the images in our minds, especially our memories. Films, like memories, give us realistic renditions of events, even if some never actually happened.

Through screening and discussing two award-winning films which deal with memory – Rashomon and Waltz with Bashir – this seminar will reveal insights they give us into the way memory works. What makes memory slip and ultimately fail? What accounts for false memories? How can we clearly remember what never happened?

This topic will produce an unforgettable symposium – if, that is, your future memory is accurate! Fee: $475.
