The Great Read with Mark Seal

Aspen local Mark Seal has been a journalist for thirty-four years. A contributing editor at Vanity Fair, he has written for many major periodicals including Esquire, Rolling Stone, InStyle, Time, and The New York Times. He has served as a collaborator on almost twenty nonfiction books including San Diego Chargers owner Alex Spanos’s Sharing the Wealth, Bo Derek’s Riding Lessons, and Without a Badge: Undercover in the World’s Deadliest Criminal Organization, about N.Y.P.D. drug cop Jerry Speziale’s infiltration of the California cocaine cartels, soon to be a major motion picture from the director of Training Day.

An anthology of his column “Celebrated Weekend” from American Way was published in 2007. Although he has written thousands of stories, Seal says none has struck a chord with readers more than the subject of his first book, Wildflower: An Extraordinary Life and Untimely Death in Africa, the story of Joan Root, the legendary wild life filmmaker and naturalist, published in 2009.
