Technology, Breakthrough Medical Research, and the Future of Healthcare
Computers and big data are opening possibilities for the future of how doctors treat patients and how the medical field manages healthcare. Revolutionary discoveries in the mapping of human genomes to immunotherapy to treat cancer are allowing for the treatment of once incurable diseases. The question remains how systems can be put in place to maximize the possibilities of these promising discoveries. Precision medicine offers a way forward to ensuring these treatments are not limited to small subclasses. Can effective policies ensure that research and medicine democratically serve humanity? How can the medical establishment partner with governments and healthcare providers to ensure treatments meet the needs of the people they serve? How are different countries managing the ethical complexities this new type of medicine raise? Participants will explore the intersection of science, medicine, policy, and healthcare providers.
