Society of Fellows symposium: What Have We Learned from Lincoln?

No less than 16,000 books grace the Library of Congress walls about the 16th president. This symposium will invite Lincoln off the gallery walls and into the seminar room to grapple with historic – and contemporary – concerns: the curbing of free speech in wartime, the balance of Constitutional restraint and executive powers, and effective governance amongst competing parties. What generates our unparalleled fascination within the national psyche? What have we learned about leadership, diplomacy, and personal conviction? Would Lincoln use drones? And what can future leaders learn from his tenure? Featuring preparatory readings, lecture, Q&A, and moderated discussion, the symposium will force you to grapple with Lincoln’s identity and governance and to come to your own conclusions about what we have learned from this most iconic of Presidents.

Moderated by Harold Holzer, author of Emancipating Lincoln, chairman of the Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation, and Vice President at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and by Craig Symonds, Professor Emeritus, United States Naval Academy.

By invitation only.
