The root of the English word “patient” is suffering. A patient is one who is unwell, in need of healing. Patience is a virtue, often. There are things we must and should endure. But there are things that should not, and need not, be endured. “Patience!” can be an excuse, a creeping fog of lethargy, of disinterestedness, or of outright hostility to what is just and right. What shines through these words of the young John Lewis is the spirit of love and the spirit of dignity with which he called all of us to march. His call is to suffering, but in the form of action in pursuit of what is right and just and free. About what do you slumber? To what light must we awake?
