NEW VIEWS Documentaries & Dialogue: “Landfill Harmonic”

“The most entertaining and emotional documentary of the year, Landfill Harmonic is the unbelievable story of the Recycled Orchestra, a youth orchestra from Paraguay that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. This modern-day fairy tale follows the orchestra on their rise to international stardom and shows how music can unite a community.” —eFilmCritic.com

Landfill Harmonic follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group of kids that live in a village that is next to one of South America’s largest landfills. This unlikely orchestra plays music from instruments made entirely out of garbage. Founded by Favio Chávez, the orchestra was catapulted into the global spotlight when their story went viral, taking them from their home into arenas and sold-out concerts. And when a natural disaster devastated their community, the orchestra provided a source of hope for the town. The film, which follows Chávez, his colleagues, and the young members of his orchestra, is a testament to the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit. (USA, 2015, 84 min.) Orchestra Director Favio Chávez will be featured in post-screening conversation via Skype.
