Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
Meditation
On the 19th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, I’m reflecting on communal and personal loss. Jonathan Safran Foer’s book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close follows the story of a young boy seeking to make sense of the world around him after his father’s death in the fall of the Twin Towers. As a nation and a global community, we continue to mourn collectively. The loss has had monumental impacts – sparking fear, anger, and wars. But among these was a true reverence for community and for love. “I like to see people reunited,” 9-year-old Oskar says as he processes his grief.
Who or what are you missing today? What acts of joy and community can you revel in, in the wake of loss?
