Polisi, President of the Juilliard School, made this claim in the first edition of The Artist as Citizen, published over a decade ago. As American arts and entertainment become increasingly enmeshed with the social and political trials weighing on our nation today, his assertion is truer than ever. 2016 sees publication of a revised and expanded edition of The Artist as Citizen, in anticipation of which Damian Woetzel will speak with Polisi at the beautiful, brand-new Steinway Recital Hall. They’ll be joined by some of Juilliard’s most exemplary citizen artists: Jon Batiste bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Monica Yunus & Camille Zamora, sopranos and co-founders of Sing For Hope. The New Steinway Hall doesn’t open to the public until April, but Steinway has graciously invited the Arts Program in as their first guests.
