Bayer Center: Community Open House
Please join us for a FREE Community Open House
at the Bayer Center on April 14th.
About this Event
The Aspen Institute welcomes you to the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies (“The Bayer Center”)—a newly constructed exhibition space and center dedicated to the study of art, media, and culture.
This festive open house begins at 12 PM, when visitors are invited to view our inaugural exhibition, Herbert Bayer: An Introduction, during open gallery hours. Between 4–7 PM, you are also welcome to join us for libations in the recently renovated Boettcher Building, located adjacent to the Bayer Center.
Please join us in celebrating this extraordinary gift from Lynda and Stewart Resnick to the community of Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley, which acknowledges Herbert Bayer—a renowned modern artist whose thinking and designs transformed our campus and the town of Aspen.
Participants will be asked to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 48 hours of the event.
Click here for more detailed instructions for providing vaccine verification.

About the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies
The Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies (“The Bayer Center”) preserves the art, legacy, and expanded contexts of artist/designer Herbert Bayer (1900–1985), who studied and taught at the Bauhaus before emigrating from Germany to the United States in 1938.
After relocating to Colorado in 1946, Bayer helped lead the postwar revitalization of the city of Aspen, shaped the early artistic and programmatic vision of the Aspen Institute, and designed the historic Aspen Meadows campus between 1949 and 1975.
The Bayer Center honors Bayer’s interdisciplinary perspective by promoting public understanding of art, design, and media through exhibitions, public programming, community engagement, and educational initiatives.
The Bayer Center, which is free and open to the public, is an institutional member of the American Alliance of Museums.
About our Building
Built in 2021, the Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies is an 8,000 sq. ft., two-story, museum-grade facility. The project was designed by Jeffrey Berkus Architects and Rowland+Broughton Architecture / Urban Design / Interior Design (R+B). R+B also served as principals in the 2021 renovation of the adjacent Boettcher building, which Bayer designed in 1975.
About our Programming
In the coming years, the Bayer Center will open a series of exhibitions in galleries across the Aspen Institute’s campus. Drawn from public institutions, private collections, and archives, these new exhibitions will feature rarely seen artworks, newly digitized materials, and contemporary responses to Bayer and his rich artistic legacy. A complete programming schedule is forthcoming.
