ASG Summer Workshop 2014

The Aspen Strategy Group celebrated its 30th anniversary at the 2014 Summer Workshop entitled, “Redux: Prescriptions for U.S.-Russia Relations,” an especially relevant series of discussions that examined potential U.S. strategies for responding to and engaging with Vladimir Putin’s Russia in the aftermath of the Ukraine crisis, Crimea annexation, and downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. The Workshop opened with the Ernest R. May Memorial Lecture on “Putinism: The Backstory,” by Strobe Talbott, an incisive account of Vladimir Putin’s rise and the experiences and ideas that inform his rule of Russia (video available here). Subsequent roundtable discussions focused on the history of the U.S.-Russia relationship, the developing Sino-Russian relationship, the NATO and European responses to Russian moves in Eastern Europe, energy considerations, U.S. national interests going forward, and areas of potential U.S.-Russia cooperation. The Strategy Group published all papers presented at this meeting in the form of a policy book in November 2014 (more information about the book can be found here). ASG director Nicholas Burns’ The Aspen Idea Magazine piece celebrating our 30 years of history can be downloaded here.
