SOCRATES CENTRAL EUROPE SEMINAR
The Next Wave of Tech Innovation: What It Means For How We Live and Do Business
Digital technology is radically changing just about everything we do, from raising families to running businesses. Much of this innovation is powered by recent breakthroughs in the development of machine learning artificial intelligence (AI). Optimists welcome this shift, arguing that technology is growing up and starting to take care of us. However, while technological shifts will undoubtedly unlock significant societal benefits and opportunities, these innovations also present new challenges and risks. Governments around the world are exploring policy and regulatory approaches to ensure the benefits of technology are widely shared while addressing concerns around bias, safety, privacy, jobs, democratic election integrity, and other potentially negative implications. This seminar will use these issues as a backdrop to examine considerations for the responsible development and application of emerging technologies. We will also explore how the technical underpinnings of recent tech innovations have the potential to solve some of the world’s most difficult problems, while also creating new challenges.
Moderated by Wilson White, Vice President, Government Affairs & Public Policy at Google, where he is the global head of government affairs and public policy for Google’s core product areas, and Cordell Carter II, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Socrates Program.
