29th Annual Summer Celebration
We are excited to share that our honorees for the 29th Annual Summer Celebration, to be held on Saturday, August 5, will be Judy Woodruff and Al Hunt. Both have enjoyed remarkable careers in journalism—Judy with her celebrated roles over the span of five decades at NBC, CNN, and PBS, and Al with his storied career at Bloomberg News, the Wall Street Journal, and CNN. We look forward to hearing their thoughts on American journalism in a moderated conversation by former CBS News correspondent Julianna Goldman.
The Aspen Institute hosts Summer Celebration every August to mark the end of the summer season in Aspen, as well as to honor exemplars of values-based leadership. Funds raised by Summer Celebration help to ensure that the Aspen Institute may continue to accomplish its mission-driven work.

About the Honoree(s):
Judy Woodruff is the Senior Correspondent for the PBS NewsHour, after serving for 11 years as its Anchor and Managing Editor. During 2023 and 2024, she is undertaking a reporting project, “America at a Crossroads,” to better understand the country’s political divide. She has covered politics and other news for more than four decades at CNN, NBC, and PBS.
For 12 years, Woodruff served as anchor and senior correspondent for CNN, where her duties included anchoring the weekday program, Inside Politics. At PBS from 1983 to 1993, she was the chief Washington correspondent for The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour. From 1984-1990, she also anchored PBS’ award-winning weekly documentary series, Frontline with Judy Woodruff. In 2011, Woodruff was the principal reporter for the PBS documentary Nancy Reagan: The Role of a Lifetime. And in 2007, she completed an extensive project for PBS and other news outlets on the views of young Americans called Generation Next: Speak Up. Be Heard.
Woodruff is a founding co-chair of the International Women’s Media Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting and encouraging women in communication industries worldwide. She serves on the boards of trustees of the Freedom Forum and The Duke Endowment. Formerly she was a trustee of the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Urban Institute, and a member of The Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.
Albert R. Hunt is a Washington columnist writing about politics and the co-host of 2022 Politics WarRoom with James Carville and Al Hunt. He was a Bloomberg Opinion and International New York Times columnist covering politics and policy; he was the executive Washington editor of Bloomberg News. Before he was a reporter, bureau chief and executive Washington editor at the Wall Street Journal. Hunt hosted the weekend talk show Political Capital with Al Hunt on Bloomberg Television and was also a weekly panelist on CNN’s Capital Gang and Evans, Novak, Hunt & Shields. He is co-author of a series of books published by the American Enterprise Institute, including The American Elections of 1980, The American Elections of 1982, and The American Elections of 1984. In 1987, he co-authored Elections American Style for the Brookings Institution. Al currently teaches a course on the Press and Politics at the University of Pennsylvania, co-hosts a podcast with James Carville, and writes a regular column for The Messenger.
About the Moderator:
Julianna Goldman is an award-winning multimedia journalist with nearly two decades of experience, having covered some of the most historic news events around the world. A former correspondent for CBS News and a former White House Correspondent for Bloomberg News during the presidency of Barack Obama, she has interviewed world leaders, appeared on every major television network and her writing has been featured in national news outlets including The Washington Post, The Atlantic, USA Today and Bloomberg Opinion.
She is also the founder of MamaDen, a platform that connects and empowers mothers, elevates the conversation around the work of caregiving at home and in the workplace and provides resources for women looking to stay in or return to the workforce.
Over the past year, Goldman wrote a political column for Bloomberg Opinion, focusing on the intersection of business, politics and policy. From 2014-2018 she was a Correspondent at CBS News, where she covered, among other stories, politics, the White House and Congress. Prior to that, she was a White House correspondent for Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Television, where she co-moderated the news organization’s first Republican presidential primary debate in 2011.
Goldman is on the Board of Advisers for C Street Advisory Group, a firm that counsels C-suites on issues around social impact, corporate strategy, and diversity, equity and inclusion. Goldman also serves on the Leadership Council for the Athena Center for Leadership at Barnard College, Columbia University. She is a member of the Board of Trustees at Imagination Stage, a non-profit children’s theatre in Bethesda, Maryland.
Goldman graduated magna cum laude from Barnard with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. She lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland with her husband and two children.
