U.S.-China Track II Dialogue 2024

The Aspen Strategy Group (ASG) and the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CCPS) convened their U.S.-China Track II Dialogue from April 22-24 in Beijing.

An American delegation assembled by the ASG, led by our Co-Chair Joseph Nye and Executive Director Anja Manuel, met in Beijing with a high-level delegation convened by our counterparts at the CCPS to discuss critical issues affecting this important bilateral relationship. Both delegations shared their perspectives on a number of issues including each side’s perceptions of the current state of U.S.-China relations; concerns related to trade and economics, emerging technologies, challenges in the Indo-Pacific, and nuclear policy; and areas for potential cooperation like curbing the flow of fentanyl, combatting climate change, and increasing people-to-people exchanges.

The delegations were comprised of former senior government and military officials, academic scholars, business leaders, and think tank experts. At this meeting of the U.S.-China Track II Dialogue, the participants worked to promote mutual understanding, frankly discuss points of divergence, and search for areas where we can enhance our cooperation.

The U.S. delegation also met with Ambassador R. Nicholas Burns, U.S. Ambassador to China and former ASG Executive Director; Liu Jianchao, Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee; Ma Zhaoxu, Executive Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs; Zheng Bijian, Founding Chairman of the China Institute for Innovation & Development Strategy; and Hu Shuli, Founder and Publisher of Caixin Media.
