Transatlantic Technology Policy Dialogue
In February 2023, the Aspen Strategy Group hosted a series of discussions and high-level meetings in Brussels focused on the alignment of U.S.-EU technology policy. Given the rapid pace of technological change and the discrepancies in the American and European approaches to new technologies, this dialogue provided a key opportunity for the U.S. delegation to find areas for mutual cooperation with their European counterparts.
The meeting sessions covered a range of critical topics including evaluating the progress of the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council; strengthening U.S.-EU semiconductor supply chains; coordinating policies like investment screenings, antitrust efforts, and data governance to support U.S.-EU global technological leadership; cooperating on joint R&D efforts; crafting a values-based approach to the commercialization of emerging technologies like AI; and more.
The U.S. delegation met with Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice-President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age and Competition of the European Commission; Bjoern Seibert, Chief of Cabinet for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen; Věra Jourová, Vice President for Values and Transparency of the European Commission; Stefano Sannino, Secretary-General of the European External Action Service; Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for the Economy; and David Van Weel, Assistant Secretary General of NATO for Emerging Security Challenges; among others.
