SOF Two-Day Symposium: The Rise of Hate
This expert-moderated seminar will explore the anatomy and history of hate, as well as the alarming uptick we are witnessing in intolerance of others, hate speech, and hate crimes today. What are the underlying causes of hate and how do individuals and groups come to embrace these types of beliefs and practices? What strategies do hate groups utilize to mobilize new recruits and what is different about the tactics they use to spread their ideology today? How has hate been mainstreamed in unprecedented forms and volumes through the digital landscape in a way that challenges our very notions of democracy? Are there prevention and/or intervention strategies that are effective in stemming the tide of hate? What is the role of our government, the private sector, citizens, and media?
Moderated by Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO, Anti-Defamation League, and Pete Simi, Director, The Earl Babbie Research Center and Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, Chapman University. Michael Žantovský, former Ambassador, Czech Republic to the United Kingdom and Executive Director, Václav Havel Library, will join the discussion.
Evening reception followed by two half-day sessions
