Balancing Act: Free Speech, Regulation, and the Responsibilities of Tech Platforms
With the rise tech platforms, digital consumption, and widespread connectivity, the arenas of discourse and social interaction have become new sites of regulatory dilemmas. Misinformation, propaganda, and harassment have complicated tech platforms existing policies and approaches to free speech and the regulation of online posting. For a private company, where does their responsibility begin and end? Is there a distinction between what is acceptable in the “offline” world versus the online world? Can these tech giants – whose rapid growth and global reach were made possible by a fairly hands-off approach to community moderation – institute comprehensive policy that effectively monitors content and adheres to a social contract with the public and belief in free speech? This seminar will examine ongoing conversations, company policies, and tensions in reconciling free speech, regulation, and the responsibilities of tech platforms.
