Next Tuesday, May 3rd is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day, a time to reflect on how critical mental health is to every child’s development.
This year’s day is focused on building the resilience of children in the face of traumatic events. A 2009 report found that 60 percent of young people 17 and under have been exposed to some kind of traumatic event.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMHSA, has more information here and here about the day, including ways you can work with children you know who have been affected by trauma, or participate in a local community event.
