One of the first events in the Genesis story is that of Adam calling the animals by name. In naming something, we define its relationship to us. For Rita Dove, before the animals’ names had time to stick, she is called by the world. She answers, and discovers pirouette and filigree, lemon sorbet and other blessings beyond number and name. What blessings do you enjoy from the world? What blessings are there but unattended to? What joys lurk with luck when you cease trying to make the world in your own image and rise to what the world is calling you to be? Give your promise to the world. It will follow you.
