Our Society Reimagined 2019: Why Can’t We Play Nice?
Our Society Reimagined is a four-week series that provides an opportunity to explore the domestic issues that have shaped our modern society, as well as a chance to gain perspective on the underlying values and ideas that we hold as individuals and as a society, and how these tenets shape our lives.
Wednesday, October 16: Why Can’t We Play Nice?
Many Americans are angry. Our society is undergoing tectonic shifts in social composition, uneven economic development, perspectives on the role of government, religious rights, gun ownership, and even the fundamental balance between individual liberty and community needs. Whether the issue is forced school vaccinations or wedding cakes that challenge religious freedoms, many citizens—both on the left and the right—refuse to compromise and recognize the need for acknowledging other perspectives, needs, and choices. In our highly polarized society, should we attempt to find a middle ground in order to make balanced policy choices, or is “balance” a slippery slope away from the values we need to protect our citizens? How can we make our society more civil?
Tom Morrison and Clint Kinney will moderate the series.
