Wednesday, October 28: How Do We Create a Sense of Security and Personal Responsibility in Society?
A sense of security is comprised of many factors, including economic security, personal safety, and health. How far should government go in keeping us “safe?” The coronavirus pandemic has impacted individuals in highly variable ways. In some cases, those impacts were the result of personal choices. But in many, if not most cases, those adversely impacted individuals were not responsible for their unfortunate outcomes. Should choosing a career in hospitality mean you’re to blame for your financial distress when your entire industry shuts down? What responsibility, if any, does society have to support these individuals who are disproportionately impacted? Or has the government gone too far? When should individuals be held responsible for their own decisions?
