Police Reform
“To serve and protect” is a common motto among police departments. As of late, the questions of whom to serve and how best to protect have become critical. Over the course of a few decades, our society has seemingly moved away from taking a “tough on crime” approach to the current “defund the police” approach. Is there merit to either end of this spectrum? Are there better ways to keep our communities safe and what needs to be done to make that happen? Can improved community policing be the answer or are larger more fundamental changes needed? Clearly every reasonable person wants to live in a safe community but defining what is safe and how best to make it safe remains a challenge. While focusing on police services and how they are provided, let’s reimagine how best to keep our communities safe. What reforms should be instituted and just as importantly, what facets of police protection need to remain?
