Public Health Grand Rounds presents The Committee: A Study of Policy, Power, Politics and Obama’s Historic Legislative Agenda on Capitol Hill
The Health, Medicine and Society programs presented a book talk for The Committee: A Study of Policy, Power, Politics and Obama’s Historic Legislative Agenda on Capitol Hill, featuring authors Bruce C. Wolpe and Bryan W. Marshall in discussion with Henry Waxman, Former US Congressman (D-CA) and Chairman, House or Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce. The conversation took place at the Aspen Institute’s Washington DC headquarters on July 18, 2018 and was moderated by Joanne Kenen, Executive Editor, Health Care, POLITICO.
The Committee is a deftly crafted insider account of how congressional committees really work. Author Bruce Wolpe served as senior advisor to Representative Henry Waxman, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and from 2009 to 2012 he kept a detailed political journal, capturing the daily business attending a major congressional committee. Working with Bryan Marshall, professor and chair of the department of political science at Miami University, Wolpe has turned his diary into an illuminating inside look at the 111th Congress. Framed by a political theorist’s questions about committee power, partisanship, and coalition building, the book follows the actual course of policy-making related to cap-and-trade, healthcare reform, tobacco, oversight of the BP oil spill crisis, and the debt ceiling agreement.
