Sandra Day O’Connor Conversation Series: A Conversation with Former Senator Jeff Flake
To honor Aspen Institute Lifetime Trustee and retired U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the Justice & Society Program created the Sandra Day O’Connor Conversation series. This four-year series brings distinguished speakers to Aspen to discuss topics that the Justice cares so much about, including civic education, judicial independence, and promotion of the rule of law internationally.
The 2019 O’Connor Conversation will feature Jeff Flake, former US Senator from Arizona and author of The Conscience of a Conservative (2017). Senator Flake will address the public at the Aspen Institute’s Colorado campus on July 10, 2019 at 6:30pm.

Justice and Society Program Executive Director Meryl Chertoff described the choice of Senator Flake, Justice O’Connor’s fellow Arizonan this way: “Flake’s record of distinguished service in the Senate, his candor, and his dedication to ideas of civic engagement make him an ideal choice to honor the Justice’s legacy of service, especially in this year that health issues have forced Justice O’Connor to step back from public life.”
The Sandra Day O’Connor Conversation is underwritten this year by law firms Shook, Hardy & Bacon; Garfield & Hecht; Foley Lardner LLP; and Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, along with Honorable C. Boyden Gray. Past speakers have been Associate Justice of the US Supreme Court Elena Kagan and Evan Thomas, author of the forthcoming biography of Justice O’Connor, First: Sandra Day O’Connor.
