Winter Words with Ethan Canin

Ethan Canin is highly regarded as both a novelist and a short story writer. His epic novel, America America, was a New York Times bestseller. His short-stories, which have been the basis of four Hollywood movies, have appeared in a wide range of magazines, including The New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly, Paris Review and Esquire, and have been selected for many prize anthologies.

He is the recipient of a California Book Award Gold Medal in Literature, the Lyndhurst Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships. Canin has an M.D. from Harvard Medical School but chose to leave medicine in 1998 in favor of joining the faculty of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa, where he continues to teach. He lives in Iowa City.
