Aspen Strategy Group members and invited experts’ recommendations for AI and national security and the way in which AI is shaping the future of global power dynamics, cybersecurity, and national defense.

Washington, DC, Wednesday, October 16 – Today, the Aspen Strategy Group released Intelligent Defense: Navigating National Security in the Age of AI. This forward-looking collection of essays and op-eds, emanating from the 2024 ASG Workshop in Aspen, Colorado focuses on the nexus of artificial intelligence and national security.

AI-powered developments in unmanned weapons, biological weapons, and more are transforming the global threat environment in ways we are only beginning to understand. The authors address the strategic need for U.S. leadership on AI against the sobering backdrop of accelerating U.S.-China competition and offer a variety of recommendations for the path forward.

As we consider the impacts of AI, our national security is at an inflection point. By harnessing AI, the United States will undoubtedly make great strides in cyber defense, intelligence, and military operations. But as we venture into these uncharted waters, the U.S. government must also set guardrails to address the unique security threats posed by AI. Our authors show that it is possible to both innovate and regulate responsibly in this area,” said Anja Manuel, Executive Director, Aspen Strategy Group and Aspen Security Forum.

The Aspen Strategy Group wants to thank all the authors who contributed to this collection. Thank you to Yoshua Bengio, Senator Chris Coons, Kent Walker, Jennifer Ewbank, Daniel Poneman, Eileen O’Connor, and Graham Allison for their invaluable contributions to this publication and the public discourse on this critical global security issue. We are also deeply grateful to those who published their analysis in external outlets after the meeting to bring the public into these discussions: Secretary Mark Esper, General David Petraeus, David Ignatius, Nick Kristof, Anja Manuel, Steve Bowsher, and Joseph S. Nye, Jr.
