Washington, DC – The Aspen Institute is pleased to announce the election of two new members to its Board of Trustees. They are: Donna Barksdale and Lewis Sanders. Each member will serve a three-year term that begins immediately.
The Institute’s board also designated Trustees David Gergen and Frederic Malek to Lifetime Trustee status.
“The Aspen Institute is fortunate to be adding Donna Barksdale and Lewis Sanders to its board,” said Institute chairman James S. Crown. “I look forward to seeking their counsel as they become immersed in the Institute’s leadership and in its activities. I’d like to thank David Gergen and Fred Malek for their significant contributions and hope and expect they will continue to stay active in Institute affairs as Lifetime Trustees.”

Newly Elected Aspen Institute Trustees
Donna Barksdale is a Mississippi native and the wife of Jim Barksdale. Ms. Barksdale holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and English and a Master’s degree in Counseling with postgraduate work in testing. She is a former businesswoman who manufactured in China and Mongolia but who is passionate about growing Mississippi’s future. She dedicates her time to working with charitable organizations, including the Barksdale Reading Institute, America’s Promise Alliance, the Women’s Foundation of Mississippi and others. She is the chair of the board of directors of MississippiToday.org, a nonpartisan digital news organization devoted to accountability journalism. She is also chair of the board of trustees of Nunoerin, an interactive customer experience company.
Lewis Sanders is the founder, CEO and Co-CIO of Sanders Capital, LLC, a value-oriented investment manager serving institutional and high net worth clients. Formerly, Mr. Sanders was the Chairman of the Board and CEO of AllianceBernstein (retired in 2008). Previous experience at AllianceBernstein’s includes: Chairman (2005-2008) and CEO (2003-2005), and Vice Chairman and CIO (2000-2003). Before the acquisition of Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., Inc. by Alliance Capital (2000), Mr. Sanders served as CEO of Sanford C. Bernstein (1993-2000). During his 32-year tenure at Bernstein, he served in many different roles. Prior to that he worked at Oppenheimer & Co. His past and present affiliations include: The Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He holds a BS in Operations Research from Columbia University and a CFA designation. He and his wife, Ali, live in Brooklyn, NY and have a home in Aspen, CO.
