Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the launch of “Futures for Frontliners,” an upskilling program that will provide tuition-free education for essential workers. According to the official announcement, the program offers:
a tuition-free pathway to college or a technical certificate to essential workers who don’t have a college degree. This includes workers like the ones staffing our hospitals and nursing homes, stocking the shelves at grocery stores, providing child care to critical infrastructure workers, manufacturing PPE, protecting public safety, picking up trash, or delivering supplies… Frontline workers who take advantage of this program will help us reach Governor Whitmer’s goal to increase the number of working-age adults with a technical certificate or college degree from 45% to 60% by 2030.
Given the uncertainties posed by COVID-19, now is the time to invest in upskilling. We’re pleased to see Michigan advancing this effort and hope governments across the country join the movement.
