The City of Perris, California, is giving city employees the opportunity to earn a free college degree. The partnership with Study.com, Civic Scholars, offers participants a bachelor’s degree pathway at no cost to the student.
The online program “is designed in micro-lessons,” says Lisa Gauthier, Government Affairs Manager for Civic Scholars. “Students take a five-minute quiz at the end of each lesson, followed by an online, proctored final exam.”
The ability to access course materials at any time and place gives students the convenience to complete the program on their own terms, even those with full-time work schedules and family obligations.
Participants are paired with academic coaches to guide their progress. “The coaches are great,” says Gauthier. “They’re here to motivate, to help with tutoring, and to help with transferring to a fully accredited university.”
19 City of Perris employees are currently enrolled in Civic Scholars, and Study.com is looking to expand the program to other municipalities.
