Milagros de Souza (Washington, DC) is a senior at Eastern Senior High School, where she is working towards her IB diploma. After school, Mila devotes her time to various activities including track, School Girls Unite, Dream Team and her new job. She also enjoys participating in the Smithsonian’s Secretary Youth Advisory Council (SSYAC). This activity allows Mila to advise the Smithsonian’s secretary on the most efficient ways to make Smithsonian museums more teen-friendly. At just 8 years old, Mila started a bakery that has now grown to become Dessert Affairs. Dessert Affairs has been in malls, opened a sister company called Cupcake Drop Off, and just recently partnered with 1-800-Flowers. Mila also serves on the Aspen Institute Youth Commission. She really enjoys her work with them as she feels like she is making a big impact. It has also served as inspiration for her 1st non-profit, Planting SEADs, which focuses on improving the Social, Emotional and Academic Development (SEAD) of high school-aged DCPS students. Selected to participate in Aspen Institute Latinos and Society Conversation with Justice Sonia Sotomayor 2017
