Aspen Strategy Group

The Aspen Strategy Group (ASG)’s mission is to address key national security challenges and promote peace by convening decision-makers in resolutely non-partisan public and private forums.

Key components of the mission:

Problem-solving: Through the Aspen Strategy Group, we forge practical, resolutely non-partisan U.S. approaches to the most important and dangerous foreign policy problems. We do this by gathering small groups of people with extraordinary expertise and practical insight, across party lines.

Educating and informing: Through the Aspen Security Forum, we engage the American and international public on the key foreign policy issues of our time, in a non-partisan, thoughtful, and content-driven forum.

Including and nurturing new voices: Through the Rising Leaders Program, the next generation of American national security leaders works across the aisle— and across government, Congress, industry, non-profits, think tanks, the military, the academy, and media—to grow and problem-solve together, as a new generation of foreign policy leaders.

Our Mission

Our History

The story of the ASG begins in 1971 with American strategist Paul Doty, who initiated an annual meeting to discuss arms control at the Aspen Institute. By the early 1980s, the group had evolved into a non-partisan forum for discussion among academics, experts, and government officials. In 1984, William Perry, Brent Scowcroft, and Joe Nye formally created the ASG. The “founding three,” highly regarded in Washington and around the world for their leadership and public service, agreed that the group would be resolutely nonpartisan.

For a comprehensive history, read ASG co-founder and chairman emeritus Joseph S. Nye., Jr.’s “The Origins and Culture of the Aspen Strategy Group.”
