Medical school faculty and active physicians in the US are predominantly white (64% of faculty and 56% of physicians) and male (59% of faculty and 64% of physicians). And while Black Americans comprise 13% of the US population, they make up only 4% of the active physician workforce. These numbers clearly illustrate that providers do not reflect the diversity of the communities they serve, and research has suggested that this can have a negative impact on patient outcomes. How can we build and support a more diverse healthcare workforce, starting with academic medical institutions?

Dr. Uché Blackstock
Founder and CEO, Advancing Health Equity
Dr. Uché Blackstock is a thought leader and sought-after speaker on health inequities and racism in health care. She is the Founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, which partners with healthcare and healthcare-related organizations to address the critical factors contributing to health inequity, through talks, workshops and consulting services. In 2019, Dr. Blackstock was recognized by Forbes magazine as of one of 10 Diversity and Inclusion Trailblazers You Need to Get Familiar With. Her writing has been featured in the Chicago Tribune and STAT News for the Boston Globe. She was formerly an Associate Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Faculty Director for Recruitment, Retention and Inclusion in the Office of Diversity Affairs at NYU School of Medicine. She left NYU School of Medicine in December 2019 after almost 10 years on faculty to focus on Advancing Health Equity. Dr. Blackstock received her undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University.
Dr. Lipi Roy
Medical Contributor, MSNBC and NBC News; Clinical Assistant Professor, NYU Langone Health
Dr. Lipi Roy is an internal medicine physician board certified in addiction medicine as well as an MSNBC and NBC News Medical Contributor. She currently serves as Medical Director of COVID Isolation and Quarantine Sites for Housing Works in New York City. Dr. Roy also serves as clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone Health. As the former Chief of Addiction Medicine for New York City jails including Rikers Island, Dr. Roy oversaw substance use treatment and recovery services at the nation’s 2nd largest jail complex. Previously, she was a primary care doctor to Boston’s vulnerable homeless population among whom the leading cause of death was drug overdose. Dr. Roy’s experience spans leadership roles from state-run to private addiction treatment centers. She also served as an attending physician at Massachusetts General Hospital and as faculty at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Roy completed her medical and master’s in public health degrees at Tulane University.
