Theater and the American Narrative

March 9, 2021  • Arts Program

Can theater tell a fully American story–one that is more inclusive and can cross the lines that divide us?

This panel features Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of The Public Theater and the Aspen Institute’s Harman/Eisner Artist in Residence and Associate Artistic Director of The Public Theater Shanta Thake, in conversation with Eric Liu, Executive Director of the Aspen Institute Citizenship and American Identity Program and Founder of Citizen University. In light of the reckoning taking place in our nation with our past and our future, we explore the potential for theater to bring people together in dialogue with each other and create a common ground. Can theater help tell a new American narrative?

Presented by the Aspen Institute Arts Program, with thanks to Jane Harman and Jane and Michael Eisner for their support of its Artist in Residence Program, and Mary Mochary for her support of the Arts Program, making panels like this one possible.
