Thelma Golden and Adam Weinberg have led their respective museums for well over a decade, Golden at the Studio Museum since 2000 and Weinberg at the Whitney since 2003. In those years they have been responsible for major exhibitions by artists including Jeff Koons, Glenn Ligon, Kehinde Wiley, and Yayoi Kusama. Both directors are charged with honoring the specific missions of their institutions—Golden to promote the works of artists of African descent and Weinberg to celebrate 20th-century and contemporary American art. How do they stay true to those founding principles while also responding to the changing demands of audiences, patrons, and critics? With over 400 museums just in Manhattan, how do these two leaders keep their heads above the fray and remain faithful to their creative visions for the future of their institutions?
